Ms Janice Strater Downey was born on December 3,1953 in Granville County, to the late Beatrice Slaughter and Elijah Edward Strater, Sr. passed Saturday, June 27, 2026 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina after a brief illness.

Janice will be missed by not only her family,  but her Granville County School family of 22 years.

Memories of her will forever live in the hearts of her two sons, Reginald T. Downey of Oxford, North Carolina and Connell Wilkerson, Jr. of Charlotte, North Carolina; a brother, Elijah Edward Strater , Jr. of Oxford, North Carolina; a sister, Carolyn S. Meredith of Hackettstown, New Jersey; four grandchildren, Ardesia,Candice, Tyjanai and Da'Lyah; three great grandchildren, Noemi, Memphis and Mazi'eon and several nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
