Elizabeth Worley Obituary

Elizabeth Chavis Worley passed on September 9, 2023, at Duke University Hospital. She was born to on July 5, 1942, to the late Will and Ruvell Chavis. 

She became a member of Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at the age of 11, where she served as a Trustee, Deaconess, and a member of several church choirs. She was a cherished member of the Usher Board. Additionally, she was a member of the Gospelettes, a well-known Granville County female gospel group.

She graduated from G. C. Hawley School in the Class of 1960.

In her career, she worked at John Umstead Hospital for 36 years, from December 1963 until April 1999. She was a certified medication technician and served on the Technician Association Board. This Board was made up of technicians from all hospitals to address workplace concerns of technicians across the state. She loved and respected her patients; she took great pride in her work and being a part of the treatment team.

She had fond and cherished memories of those she served. She often talked about making a difference in the lives of her patients and helping them to gain control of their lives so they could return to the community. Ms. Worley credited GOD for guiding her along her career path and for giving her the gift of concern and love for mankind. John Umstead Hospital honored Ms. Worley due to her hard work and dedication to patients. She also worked as bus driver for Granville County School District.

Outside of her professional life, Ms. Worley had various hobbies and interests. She was a Den Mother for her sons' Boy Scout troop and an active parent volunteer for South Granville High School. She was also a member of a women's social club that organized activities for neighborhood children in Butner. Ms. Worley had an entrepreneurial spirit and worked as a Tupperware saleswoman, an Avon representative, a Princess House, and a Mary Kay consultant. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, and had a passion for collecting dolls. Ms. Worley loved her family. She loved traveling with her children and going on adventures with her siblings.

Ms. Worley is survived by three children: Camilla N. Thompson of Norfolk, Virginia; Dwayne C. Worley (Monique) of Durham, North Carolina and Timothy B. Worley (Kenyatta) of Woodbridge, Virginia. She is also survived by her five siblings, Henry Chavis, Martha Hall (John), Robert Chavis, Willie Chavis (Linda), all of Granville County and Johnny Chavis (Sandra) of Durham, North Carolina. She leaves behind five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Ms. Worley was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Ruvell Chavis, one sister Patricia Chavis, and one brother Ike Chavis.

Elizabeth Worley will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the community she touched throughout her life. Her dedication, love, and kindness will always be remembered and cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her.
